Threat to major fund-raising event averted

Friends of Wool Community Library Trustees were concerned when their major fund-raising event, the annual Quiz evening, held to coincide with World Book Night on 23 April was threatened by a heating failure in the main hall of the D’ Urberville Centre in Wool. As temperatures were forecast to plummet on the Saturday evening and the event a total sell-out, an SOS went out and local firm A1 Toolhire in Wareham saved the day with a generous concession on the loan of two portable gas heaters. The Centre management committee accepted a lower fee for the hire of the Hall so that the heater hire cost could be covered.

Wool Community Library has built up a strong local following in the community serving not just Wool, East Burton and Bovington but other neighbouring villages, so much so that all 72 tickets had been sold before the night. The 12 tables sat down to a high-tech environment. Each Quiz question was projected on the wall with a countdown clock wiping it after 30 seconds and a second projector kept pace on the next wall with the round by round scores. It was so competitive that a tie-break was needed for “The Walkers” to defeat “The Inscrutables.” Generous in victory, the “Walkers” immediately donated the cash prize back to the library funds.

Such was the hallmark of community support that 10 other local businesses supplied raffle prizes*and other donations were made so that the night raised a record £300 + for the volunteer-run library which is now well into its fourth year of community management.

All participants also enjoyed a large Ploughman’s supper in the interval, prepared by a volunteer catering team.

Sue Kerr, Chair of the Friends of Wool Library, who organised the Quiz with husband , Andrew and scorer, Peter Green,  said, “This was a great team effort and a very cheering end to a difficult week for the library as we had not be able to open the library for 3 sessions because of a fault on the BT system putting our computers, self-service machine and printers out of action. Thankfully the problem was fixed on 25 April. We have reopened and look forward to "business as normal".
